Iberdrola, one of the world’s largest energy companies, has reaffirmed its commitment to quantum computing to revolutionize energy management.
The company is participating in Q Expo 2026, held at the Euskalduna Conference Center in Bilbao, as part of the Basque Quantum strategy, an initiative promoted by the Department of Science, Universities, and Innovation to position the region as a leader in quantum technologies. The event was covered in a special program on COPE EUSKADI.
Iberdrola’s goal is to apply quantum computing in key areas such as smart grids, energy storage, and demand forecasting. In the words of Luis Malumbres, the company’s Director of Digital Innovation, although it is not yet a technology for everyday use, “the potential of quantum technologies across all sectors, and in energy specifically, is enormous.” For this reason, he believes that “it is worth being involved in the development from the very beginning.”
