Donostia-San Sebastián has become the first European city to host an IBM Quantum System Two, the company's most advanced quantum computing system, following the official opening of the joint research centre between the Basque Government and IBM.

The installation of this state-of-the-art quantum computing system represents a historic milestone for the Spanish and European technological ecosystem. The IBM Quantum System Two, which will begin operating in the coming weeks, will enable complex quantum calculations that until now were only possible in laboratories in the United States.

The agreement between the Basque Government and IBM provides for a joint investment of more than €50 million over the next five years, earmarked for research into quantum computing and its application in strategic sectors such as energy, health, finance and logistics.

The centre, located in the Gipuzkoa Science and Technology Park, will have a multidisciplinary team of Basque and international researchers who will work on applied research projects. Among the planned lines of work are the development of quantum algorithms for optimisation, the simulation of quantum materials and post-quantum cryptography.

This initiative is part of the Basque Government's strategy to consolidate the Basque Country as a European benchmark in quantum technologies, complementing existing capabilities in the region and strengthening public-private collaboration in R&D&I. The centre will also serve as a training hub for students and professionals who wish to specialise in quantum computing.

The inauguration was attended by representatives of the Basque Government, IBM executives and members of the international scientific community, who highlighted the potential of this infrastructure to drive innovation and technological development in Europe.
